The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wichita Falls conducted the very first girls deer hunt for the organization. Frank, from the North Texas Field & Stream, went further to say it was the first all female deer hunt in the state and possibly even in the country.

We had 15 girls attend the first ever all female deer hunt. All of the adult hunters that also served as guides were women. The game wardens were all women. It rained on and off all day Saturday. All of our girls were true hunters. They toughed through the rain and kept on their stands, waiting for the right deer to walk through their scopes. One of the girls bagged a doe Saturday night, between rain showers. Sunday morning, the girls were all determined to bag even more deer. They had stiff competition with other hunters in the area and a large pack of very hungry coyotes. Two other girls brought back one each. The girls had excellently prepared meals by master chefs who are experts in making grub for people who rough it out in the woods. They had BBQ brisket, chopped beef, beans and cheddar peppers for their lunch. They also had chicken fried steak, chili, mashed potatoes, and the best milk gravy ever along with peach cobbler. The hot chocolate was available all day both days. Breakfast Sunday morning was scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits, and gravy. Had it not rained after hunting Saturday night, we all were going snipe hunting. The girls eagerly and carefully gathered sticks that made the right sounds to lure the snipe into our grasps. Some of the girls wanted to cook and eat snipe over the bonfire while others just wanted to catch and release the tasty little birds. Plans have already been made for a snipe hunt during next year’s deer hunt. All of the girls asked if they could go hunting again next year. We have also been told that several girls’ dads, uncles, and their dad’s friends have all bought hunting licenses so they can take the girls hunting with them.
