The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wichita Falls Corporate Board of Directors recently approved a Renovation and Preservation project that will restore the Central Club’s main gymnasium.
The historic Central Gym was built in 1940 by local craftsman and WPA labor and is the oldest operating nonprofit gymnasium in Wichita Falls. The gym has hosted numerous boxing tournaments, basketball games, Christmas parties and special events throughout the 8 different decades.
Work has started on the project and will include the following:
- Remove suspended ceiling above the gym floor to expose original structure, beams and trusses
- Install new lighting above gym floor and bleacher sections
- Remove and replace acoustical ceilings above bleacher sections
- Repair all damaged drywall and wood decking surfaces
- Paint entire gym walls, ceiling, trusses, beams and all existing painted surfaces
- Refinish original gym bleacher seating
- Install roller shades on west windows
The project’s completion date is early June 2018 and the general contractor is Wendeborn Construction, Inc.
The project’s cost is approximately $100,000 and is being funded through the generosity of donors.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wichita Falls began in 1929 and serves more than 5,000 children annually through the Central, Northeast, Northwest, Rosewood, Southeast, Southwest and Camp Graham Ball facilities.
